Long delays on the A417 due to no one manually operating the traffic lights.
Reported in the Current Roadworks - live information category anonymously at 18:20, Mon 7 October 2019
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 6 minutes later
Why is it every time there are traffic lights on the A417, there are long delays? Time and time again it happens, simply because the workmen aren't instructed to man the lights at peak times. Long queues one direction, and only 5 or 6 cars queuing the other direction.
And please don't reply saying this will be looked into. I know by the time you've looked into this problem, the lights have been packed up and gone. It needs resolving NOW, not in a few weeks.

I had the same experience both Monday morning (heading east) and Monday evening (at about 19:15-19:30) of being delayed by these lights by approximately 20 minutes both times. The evening was especially frustrating as obviously no work was on going at that time. In the morning there where people working in site but evidently oblivious of a mile (+) long queue in one direction being let through about 3 at a time vs. a visibly much shorter queue in the other direction.

Long queue stretching back into Wantage (Broadway Motors roundabout) and only 6 cars queuing the other direction. See attached Google map image as PROOF!!!

Long long delays coming out of wantage along A417 towards ardington - this happens every time there are new traffic lights set up along this road! Why can't the phasing be a condition set by the council when granting permission to have traffic lights on this road. Again this morning traffic backed up right through Wantage town centre, and nothing coming towards Wantage way - are these people stupid who are doing the traffic lights and can't see the problem!

I think half the problem is that the contractors employed aren't local to the area and therefore don't know which direction will get the bulk of traffic and at what time of day. I had similar discussions with the project manager when the roadworks were at East Hendred installing all the gas, electric and other services to the new houses. Until he actually went out and looked for himself, and it taking him over half an hour to get from Rowstock to East Hendred, he finally realised what all the complaints were about. He still had problems communicating it across to the contractors though.
Bottom line is though, no one at OCC particularly cares. Hence why there are the same complaints over and over again.

Sigh!!! As per usual the roadworks have been completed before OCC has done anything about the complaint. Is it any wonder we have no faith in you?

Roadworks had finished and gone. Not aware that anyone from OCC ever looked into it. From past experience they probably didn't, because the delays were there the whole time the workmen were working.
Oh well, until next time it happens!!!!
Be like Groundhog day all over again.
