The works in Croft Rd, Thame forms part of the countywide Micro-surfacing programme encompassing 41 sites throughout Oxfordshire. Micro-surfacing is a cost effective cold-applied thin bituminous surface course using bitumen emulsion binders and fine graded aggregates with fillers and other additives and is ideal for use on urban roads and utilised to protect the structural integrity of the existing carriageway by preventing the ingress of water, sealing the road and restoring surface texture and improving skid resistance.
Due to the installation processes and the viscosity of the treatment its initial appearance appears untidy and unfinished but this is to be expected. As the treatment receives embedment from passing vehicles, mechanical sweeping to remove any excess chippings and absorption or evaporation of the various chemicals within the mixture the appearance will continue to improve over the following weeks and months.
Micro-surfacing is an overlay treatment, this will mean some pieces of ironwork (manholes, gullies etc) will be lower than previously experienced. In some cases this leads to the cover being outside of its safety tolerance and is deemed a risk to motorists, cyclists etc. In these case the cover is temporarily buried during surfacing, its location is marked on site and recorded. In the coming weeks a follow up ‘Ironworks’ team will be attending all sites to uncover and covered items and reset to the new surface height. Regards
