New road sign blocking visibility of oncoming traffic

Reported in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category anonymously at 09:20, Tuesday 23 July 2019

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 5 minutes later

Yesterday you sent me an update telling me that several people had reported the concern I have already raised with you and that you agreed the issue was compounded when there is a lot of traffic using the road in both directions. Today you sent me an update telling me there is no problem with your fancy new signs and you are taking no further action. Which is it? I am telling you that the new signs prevent me from viewing oncoming traffic at busy times. This is an issue for all 3 of the drivers in my family. I therefore consider you are knowingly condoning a situation which you have been told is unsafe. I will therefore report this issue to the HSE immediately. For information, if you are in normal car, not a USV or vehicle where the driver sits in a high position, then your visibility is affected by the positioning and the size of the 2 new signs. If you are a passenger you are not seated in a position to judge correctly. If there is no oncoming traffic you cannot appreciate the situation when there is oncoming traffic. I do not consider you have investigated this matter properly and remain concerned for my safety, the safety of my family and of others, especially those who do not know this road junction.

  • Thank you for seeking some further clarification on the recent replacement of the 'megaflecta' bollards on this central refuge. To scrutinise the exact specification of the bollards we are temporarily removing them, so that they can be examined back in our depot. In the meantime, some temporary 'keep left arrows' will be deployed at the site, so to mark the location whilst this work is undertaken.
Many thanks once again for bringing this to our attention.

  • Following the 'megaflecta' bollards being brought back to our depot, it has been identified that the specification installed was indeed incorrect. Our contractor is working to rectify this matter as soon as possible. In the meantime, the temporary signing will remain at this location. Thank you again for raising this matter.

  • The same bollards, which obstruct drivers view have been put back! These are dangerous and will cause an accident if not replaced with smaller bollards.

  • Thank you for your update of 22nd September. Further to this, we have had the signs measured this morning (as a priority) and we can confirm that the sings now installed are an exact replacement to those that were originally here (and not the slightly larger versions that were previously installed and subsequently removed in error). We trust this helps and thank-you for drawing our attention to the contractor initially replacing the signs with ones of the incorrect diameter.

  • I have been kept in the loop via email on comments made by someone else regarding this same issue. The last comments made over the weekend were not mine. However, I agree with the other person. You have replaced with exactly the same oversized signs as we have complained about previously and NOT the original signs which were perfectly acceptable. There is still an unresolved issue in this location. It is still dangerous. We don't care about the size of the signs, we care about having our view of the road obstructed by your signs and we care about the risk to our lives and the lives of others.
