Pedestrian sightline severly obscured by vegetation.

Reported in the Grass and Hedges category by D J Mackay. Parish Clerk. at 13:27, Sat 13 July 2019

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 3 minutes later

The sightline for pedestrians attempting to cross the A420 from the westbound bus stop to the village of Littleworth is severly obscured by the shrubs and other vegetation. Crossing this busy main road is always hazardous but with the amount and height of vegetation is now extremely dangerous because westbound traffic is totally out of sight on the bend between the Snooty Mehmaan and the bus stop until one has stepped out into the carriageway. When checking for traffic both ways it is extremly easy to miss seeing a vehicle that has passed into this bend of the road whilst looking westward to check traffic fron Swindon and then step into the path of traffic suddenly appearing from the Oxford direction.

  • Please can something be done to assist Littleworth pedestrians crossing the busy A420 road after getting off of the bus when returning from Oxford. The benefit of a splendid bus service is nullified by the raw fear of trying to cross the road safely at the end of a journey to Oxford or at the start of a journey to Swindon. I've taken to rushing to the rear of the bus as soon as I have got off, and standing in front of the queuing traffic behind the bus so that at least I can get half way across safely. This is not always popular with motorists. Please could we have a pedestrian crossing. The disruption to traffic flow would be no more than than occasioned by the bus stopping.

  • The continuing lack of attention to the serious vision issue at the Littleworth (west) bus stop is not only threatening the safety of bus users as detailed above, but also motorists. Because buses approaching the Littleworth (west) bus stop cannot see the stop until they are almost upon it, they are having to brake urgently if there is somebody waiting at the stop. If the bus misses the stop and comes to a halt beyond the marked stop area, the passenger has no path to get to the bus and has to squeeze between the bus and the overgrown verge. This is not acceptable, particularly for older people. This morning the emergency braking of the bus to stop caused a ripple of similar braking in the line of traffic behind the bus, the bus having not had time to indicate and slow before stopping. Please do something about this before someone gets injured at this bus stop.

  • Thank you for your report and apologies for delay in response. I regret that Oxfordshire County Council do not currently have the available funding for such a scheme.

We would suggest that an initial approach is made to your Parish Council so that due consideration can be given towards its priority within the local area and so that the proposal can be endorsed and promoted locally. Parish Councils are normally well placed to secure the necessary financial cost to such a scheme.
