Lack traffic direction signs into Wantage Market Place

Wantage market place is a clockwise roundabout. But some visitor drivers do not realise this. Almost daily a vehicle will enter from Wallingford Street travelling straight ahead towards Mill Street. The road arrow at Wallingford Street actually tells drivers to turn left. Multiple arrows need to advise drivers of traffic direction. Drivers also travel from Newbury Street directly into Wallingford Street, especially if the town centre is gridlocked. I notice every day numerous vehicles enter the town centre from Newbury Street, turn sharp right through the car park and drive into Wallingford Street. Sunday mornings cars drive the wrong direction around the town centre because it is not obvious which way to go. Cars also drive fast around the town centre, braking hard on the bends. I request two speed advisory signs. I am also surprised that vehicles park in the town centre car park with their vehicles overhanging the pedestrian crossing zig zag and double yellow lines. Although there are no enforcement timing plates for the yellow lines. I am also a professional driver, and have over 30 years driving experience. I have worked for 14 years as an Attendant for Wantage Town Council and these observations are based on my experience. Thank you. John Winch. Wantage resident.

Dear Sir/Madame, Thankyou for your reply. I work in Wantage market place for the town council and you have missed my point. There are no signs directing traffic before entering the town centre. The bollards on the traffic island you mention are misleading, confusing and useless. The bollards themselves are battered, ugly and the town would look smarter if they were removed which I have previously requested. For many years they were not working. I mentioned this to my HOD who contacted Mr Francis at OCC and they were fixed. I keep the MP as clean and tidy as possible and those bollards are an eyesore. The only signs directing traffic entering the MP from Wallingford Street is the worn out arrow on the road outside the Post Office Vaults. The arrow tells drivers to turn left. Whereas it should be a series of arrows to turn left or bare left clockwise around the market place. Traffic in the market place regularly congests and cars an lorries often travel straight from Wallingford Street along the north side of the MP into Mill Street because it is not obvious to a new comer which way to go. Vehicles also regularly enter Wallingford Street directly from Newbury Street, with out going around the market place car park which they should do. The town centre would also benefit and be safer if the speed limit was reduced.
