Redundant street light

Reported in the Street lighting category anonymously at 08:15, Friday 5 July 2019

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 4 minutes later

Littleworth Hill Street light No 5 at the bottom right of the hill. I notice Light 4, a little further up, has been replaced with a new lower, downward facing bulb. I wonder if the same could be done with 5? It was moved some years ago and has shone ever since into our bedroom window. I would not object if it were removed. Please provide contact details for me to take this forward in discussion with my neighbour at 10 Littleworth Hill.

Updates

  • Many thanks for the email , we unfortunately cannot remove lighting column 5 but we can look to install the same LED lantern that is fitted to 4. If you wish to have a discussion with your neighbour that would be grand and then we can go from there.

  • I have spoken to my neighbours at 10 Littleworth Hill. Both are content for the light to be amended as proposed and equally happy for it to be removed altogether. Given that this light was moved from the centre of the end of Littleworth Hill when the previous occupant of Littleworth Hill had the kerb dropped, I can see no impediment to it's removal altogether. It serves no purpose as no pedestrian or vehicular traffic pass it and it is in the very corner of the end of the road between our two houses. I would be grateful for an email contact at OCC with whom my neighbour and I might discuss this further.

  • Many thanks for the follow up on this one, i will ask an inspector to assess the need for the lighting column at the end of this road, if its deemed as needed we will replace with an LED lantern , if we can remove then we will arrange that in our programme. Many thanks for raising this issue with us

  • This photograph shows the precise location of the street light. You will see it is at the far right hand corner of the end of the cul-de-sac.

  • Many thanks for the update, this light will have to remain currently so i will raise a fault to get the lantern changed for you the same as number 4. We will however look to see if we can design this column out. Any further issues please get in touch

  • Why will it have to remain "currently"? What are the criteria for you to "design this column out"?

  • Many thanks for the update. Its part of the british standard 5489 to ensure we have the highway lit to the correct specification which would have been designed in when the development was put in , in this case to light a turning circle. If it can be removed we may have to increase the lighting levels to ensure we have the correct lux levels on the highway.

  • Great job! We returned from holiday to find the light has been replaced with one which does not shine into our bedroom window but softly illuminates a spot in the garden for sitting out on warm autumn evenings!
