New island in the middle squeezes car close to cyclists

A new pedestrian Island is being created in the middle of the road to replace the traffic light arrangement. Because of the relatively large size of the island, less space is now given to the car and cyclist to use. The first picture shows a car already quite close to the new island and yet it would have given little space to a cyclist. Many cyclists, including many young school children of Cherwell School, will ride through this spot as they try to get to the cycle path which begins at the left of the car, as can be seen in the picture. The second picture shows that the car is even closer to a potential cyclist. The pedestrian island seems unnecessarily large, as can be seen in the third picture. There are a way which can give more space to the car and cycling traffic. The raised block closest to the viewer in the third picture may be moved closer to the other block which will move the tight or congested area away from the entrance to the cycle path. I use the cycle path very often and noticed that the traffic light was working well and helped me to cross the road when coming back from Cherwell School. It seems that the council is replacing the traffic light with the pedestrian island. This will not only create the problem explained above (squeezing the cyclist at the entrance to the cycle path) but the elimination of the traffic light will also make the cyclist (coming from Cherwell School) crossing the road more difficult. The original traffic light may well work better and safer for both cars and cyclists. I hope the council can seriously rethink the modification in order to protect school children cyclists.
