Heavily trafficked pavement 'closed' by building work

Reported in the Pavements category anonymously at 10:26, Monday 24 June 2019

Sent to Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council 5 minutes later

A section of pavement on the north side of Margaret road near the junction with Windmill road has been completely blocked by site fencing / barriers for the last week with a sign suggesting pedestrians should cross to the other side of the road. This 'closure' is putting hundreds of primary school children, pre-primary school children and their parents / carers in a very dangerous situation. This is a key walking and cycling route to Windmill Primary school - the largest in Oxfordshire. There is no safe place to cross or re-cross Margaret Road due to parked vehicles opposite, heavy traffic and BJ's garage resulting in very young and vulnerable pedestrians having to walk in the carriageway in very heavy traffic. The 'closure' could very simply be avoided by the developer laying down some temporary boarding on top of the aggregate to allow pedestrians to continue to use the pavement safely. This needs to be sorted immediately before a child or parent is injured.

  • No action has been taken since the issue was reported. Vulnerable pedestrians are still being forced into the highway among traffic. The contractor's attitude when approached was intransigent and defensive: 'I've done nothing wrong, I can keep the pavement closed as long as I want'. Please resolve urgently
