Obstructions placed by householders on grass verge to road
Reported in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 12:06, Thu 23 May 2019
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 4 minutes later
Area unlit & obstructions installed are tripping hazards. The verge belongs to the road & area has no yellow line, but householders attempt to prevent parking by dangerous obstacles placed in verge.

This report is pathetic. If the verge belongs to the road, and therefore the council, then it is up to them to maintain them. Let’s be honest and agree that that will not happen. The reporter obviously took the photographs in daylight and thus the obstacles are obvious for everyone to see. Ironically, I believe they are also close to the only street lamp in the lane, so would also be seen in the hours of darkness. All credibility in this post has therefore been lost. The residents obviously work hard to ensure the lane is kept neat and tidy and therefore more attractive to the many visitors the Thames Path attracts. They are only trying to protect their hard work from the inconsiderate drivers who clog up the lane when visiting the Benson Waterfront Cafe; another problem that nobody seems to want to accept responsibility in resolving. If walking in daylight the obstacles are obvious and do not present a trip hazard. If walking in the hours of darkness, then get a torch - you will then see the any hazards and not become a hazard yourself to other users of the lane. Pathetic!

It is not possible to walk with a dog on a lead along the verge because of the obstructions & one is compelled to walk in the road with the dangers that poses with vehicles. Some of the obstructions (such as the metal rods) are in fact extremely difficult to see even in daylight and will not be immediately visible to manoeuvring traffic, especially at night. Residents can’t take it upon themselves to make the road impossible to park in, and in effect install their own yellow line. If residents wish to prohibit parking vehicles they should persuade the highway authorities to install double yellow lines. They can’t unilaterally install their own inappropriate and dangerous obstacles. Were an accident to happen, will the residents accept liability for the resulting damage & are they covered by insurance?
