Danger of collision from vehicles exiting site and cyclists

Reported in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category anonymously at 14:09, Friday 17 May 2019

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 2 minutes later

There is a dangerous blindspot regarding heavy vehicles exiting the industrial site and cyclists travelling westwards along the A40 cycle track. The hedgerow is too high for cyclists to see any vehicles approaching the exit until the last second and the noise from A40 traffic means the vehicles cannot be heard either. Therefore cyclists are committed to passing the junction before the vehicles come in to view. As the drivers are invariably looking to their right to see what traffic is passing eastwards along the A40 any cyclist that has just begun to cross will not be seen which could result in a major accident. As a regular cyclist along this stretch I have had near misses on several occasions. A strategically placed mirror on the junction's island would at least offer a warning of a vehicle approaching.

  • Photos from 17/05/19. Please note that the drivers are not negligent. As cyclists cannot see the vehicles, the drivers cannot see the cyclists. A mirror located on the grass island would at least allow cyclists to see exiting vehicles as they approached the A40.
