Persistent back-up in traffic due to poor indications of Right of Way and use by over-sized vehicles

Reported in the Highway Schemes category anonymously at 16:29, Friday 22 March 2019

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later

1st problem is the confusing Right-of-way for this 'chicaned' narrowing of the street, as the road signs are not placed in a clear area, with a defined waiting area. Possibly could do with a set of traffic lights at times.

2nd and huge problem at many times is the blatent use of the road for over-sized vehicles, especially as its a weight-restricted 7.5T road. HGV drivers often sneak through Watlington, only to 1. Break up the road surface and 2. Block the road at this chicane, when they struggle to get through the narrow access.

Maybe we need to enforce the restriction properly with weight sensored cameras at each end of Watlington and/or provide traffic calming measures, along with a better thought out set of road markings at the choke point, as indicated by the pin.

  • Not even had an acknowledgement or reply from Oxfordshire County Council (OCC)

  • Still no acknowledgement. Traffic still horrendous, and dangerous. Over-sized (>7.5t) vehicles using Watlington as thoroughfare to Didcot from M40 and vice-versa.

  • Barely a point to reply, as Oxfordshire county Council rarely acknowledge and just vlose each case.

  • Still ongoing. Fraught traffic with countless HGV traffic passing through (clearly not accessing Watlington itself). Lack of clear Traffic flow signage and associated road-lines to define who has (or rather should have) priority. Not helped by the amount of random kerbside parking and of course road-rage on who defines themselves more important to speed through the High Street. However... as always OCC will just close the case, with a tedious "under investigation" sign-off to placate its people.

  • Thank you for your report and apologies for the delay in my response. All of Watlington is subject to a 7.5 tonne vehicle weight restriction, however this restriction has an 'Except for Access' clause which permits a vehicle over the posted weight limit to enter the restricted area if it has a legitimate reason for example to deliver to a property within the restriction itself. I can therefore confirm that the vehicle weight restriction is correctly signed.
