  • When our street lighting contractor (Amey Street Lighting) attended the site it was confirmed that it was a fault with the electricity supply to that lights rather than within the lights themselves. In much the same way as a typical household, Oxfordshire County Council is responsible only for the street light, but not for the electrical infrastructure outside of its own asset, the cabling serving street lights is provided and maintained by the Local District Network Operator (LDNO), which for this region is Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). These are outside of the local authority control and subject to a separate regulatory framework overseen by ofgem.

The aim of the LDNO is to typically repair cable faults within 20 working days, where possible, however the recent bad weather has resulted in a significant increase in faults that SSEN have had to address, and supplies to households and other properties will always be given priority in these instances, this has led to a significant delay in the typical response time for street lights.

Unfortunately, this has meant that there are several street lights across the county which have similar delays, and whilst it is anticipated that these will be addressed soon, if this is not the case we continue to be escalating the matter within SSEN and potentially ofgem as there has been a concerning trend of delays for a period of time now.

Once the electricity supply company advises Oxfordshire County Council the fault is rectified we will confirm this within our regular inspection programme to ensure that the light is in working order.

  • I’m surprised that these lights have not been fixed yet , as it’s such a busy road. Also has a cycle path that crosses this road by the old power station roundabout. Just a Matter of time before an accident happens!!

    Still open, via questionnaire

  • Unfortunately this fault is with Scottish and Southern Energy, we are in constant communications with them to chase all of the outstanding supply faults. They are monitored by Ofgem, I can only apologise these units are not yet back in light
