Inappropriate cycle lane

The new paint is nice but this is not a cycle lane however much we all wish that it were. The minimum width recommended in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges is 1.5m and then only when queueing traffic or other restrictions are expected (for example **prior** to the traffic lights with High Street and St Martins/Castle Streets).
The width of the lane leaves no space for a cyclist to maneuverer safely and recent experience has been that it encourages drivers of motor vehicles to overtake when it is not safe to do so. The presence of the lane encourages drivers to forget rules 163 and 213 of the Highway code (just out of shot is a rainwater drain which encroaches two-thirds across the lane).
