Street light out at night

Reported via mobile in the Lamp Out of Light category anonymously at 13:24, Thursday 27 August 2026

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The Parish Council told me to contact you as it’s not their issue. A resident requested that the light be turned off, apparently in order to reduce power usage. However, I am very concerned that the particular location of this light has not been properly considered from a public safety point of view. The light is positioned next to a set of steep steps, and there is also a bus stop nearby. When the light is switched off, this whole area becomes extremely dark and the steps are very difficult to see. This creates a genuine risk of someone tripping or falling, particularly for older residents or anyone using the steps in poor weather. This is a small village and there are residents of all ages, including elderly people who need to be able to walk safely around the village. The lack of lighting also makes it very difficult for me to see safely when leaving my own property at night. I am also concerned about personal security. I appreciate that our village is generally a safe place, but completely removing lighting from an area containing steps and a bus stop creates an unnecessarily dark area where people cannot easily see who or what is around them. It seems particularly concerning when the street light further down the road remains illuminated, meaning that there is now an isolated section of darkness rather than a consistent reduction in lighting. Could you please confirm: Who made the decision to have this particular light switched off? Whether the safety implications of doing so were assessed before the decision was made? Make sure the light goes back on at night
