Highly dangerous exit from the estate

Reported anonymously at 13:08, Fri 30 October 2020

Visibility exiting the Cholsey Meadows estate estate from Rotherfield Road (where the Ox Shed cafe is) is very poor and has lead to a number of side car crash near misses. The exit joins Reading Road in a curved section (see map). In particular, visibility to the left is almost null since there are high walls and sometimes bins left out in the public pathway. Reading Road is limited to a speed of 30 entering Cholsey, but often cars drive faster in this stretch. The most common near misses happen since cars leaving the estate are forced to enter the left lane of Reading Road to check for incoming traffic from the right. Since visibility to the right is also poor, often cars have to reverse back into the estate if there is incoming traffic from the left lane. If there is a car behind, this might not possible, leaving the first car stranded in the middle of Reading Road on a lane where cars unfortunately drive faster than they should. This should be easily mitigated by introducing a convex mirror that points left as one leaves the estate. This solution is already used in Reading Road towards Wallingford to assist exit from another private estate.
