Inconsistent signs and road markings Reported anonymously at 13:27, Wed 6 February 2019 If travelling south on the A4185 towards the new Chilton A34 roundabout, there are two lanes entering the roundabout. There are only two normal exits to the roundabout. One for the A34 Northbound and one two go straight on, over the bridge towards Chilton and the A34 South. Accoring to the highway code the left hand lane is for turning left or going straight on so the right hand lane serves no purpose as it is. Some people approach in the lane according the highway code and the signage, some who know the road layout better approach in the righthand lane leading to frequent confusion, aggrivation and risk of an accident on the roundabout. This could be mitigated in two ways. 1) Put arrows on the approach lanes indicating the left lane is for the left turn and the right lane is for straight on. 2) The existing roundabout sign is drawn so that the second exit appears to be straight on when in fact it further round than that. The sign could be changed to show the layout more accurately, then drivers would choose the appropriate lane correctly. The situation will get worse when the new services are built, requiring even more thought to the lane markings and signage.
