Church Walk, Rising Hill and Allen’s Lane in Upper Heyford
200 metre lane has at least 11 major potholes. In addition, both sides of the lane, but especially the right, are badly eroded by heavy farm traffic. Near to The Cottage at the end of Church Walk, approximately 20 yards of the right hand side is breaking up. Road practically non-existent as you approach end of Allen's Lane: Full report sent by e mail.
The condition of the lane is exacerbated by two major factors:
1 Traffic. The lane carries a great deal of heavy farm traffic along its whole length, including huge modern tractors, land-working tackle and enormous trailers which, when full, must weigh many tonnes. Also, the Allen’s Lane section is much used by vans and trucks servicing the railway line and by Waterways traffic, plus many private vehicles parking by the canal at Allen’s Bridge.
1 Water. Some of the gulley erosion is due to water streaming down the lane, sometimes in very large volumes, from Mill Lane and the High Street in times of heavy rainfall. It seems that the street drains in the village are not performing as they should. When this water freezes, as it does upon occasion, the tarmac also suffers from ice expansion erosion.
Allen’s Lane in particular is likely to be used by ever more traffic as the Heyford Park development continues, and that farm machines are increasingly larger and heavier,
The Parish Council believes that these problems require a re-surfacing of the lane rather than piecemeal repairs.
